Meet the Team: Alex Ball

At PetroLedger, we get to know our clients pretty well. We want you to know who we are, too. There’s a lot more personality than you might expect to find at a financial firm, and while professionalism is our first order of business, creating a fun work environment is always close behind! Today we’d like to introduce Marketing and Administrative Associate Alex Ball, who is working a joint role for both our Sales & Marketing Team, as well as for our Operations division in Houston. We sat down with him to ask a few questions and get to know him a little better…

If you were suddenly told that you had to move to another country, where would you choose to move?

If I had to move countries suddenly, I would probably go to Mexico. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting on multiple occasions and enjoyed many different aspects of the country. There is a kind and hospitable culture that can be felt in both the big cities and the smaller farm towns, there are varied and wonderful climates, and to say that their food is amazing would be an understatement. The houses there can range from being modern masterpieces that rival American designs to the brightly colored farm houses that you would dream of painting as a kid. There is a lot of baroque architecture that is all over the country, as well as a ton of cultural history, so you would not run out of things to do or see, and the cost of living being lower is the cherry on top of this ice cream sundae of a country.

Can you tell me about your background?

I was born in Oakbrook, Illinois, which made me a lifelong fan of many Chicago sports teams, but after moving around a bit, I ended up in Waukee, Iowa when I was two and grew up there. I then went on to go to college at Creighton University (ROLL JAYS!), where I studied Marketing and Business Intelligence Analytics: Digital Media and Design, and where I met my now-wife Melanie just a month into going there. We moved back to her hometown of Houston after we graduated and married (in that order), and the first post-graduate job I landed was this one. I’ve worked a variety of jobs in the past, ranging from working with the Iowa Cubs as a Parking Attendant to being the Social Media Content Coordinator for an Esports Social Media Company by the name of Juked.gg, all of which has helped shaped me into the person that I am today.

You just got your own podcast! What do you talk about, and who do you invite as your first guest?

I could host a podcast on a variety of topics, rap or film being some of the strongest, but if there was one thing that I could talk about ad nauseum, it would be Esports. I’ve been a follower of the Esports scene since I stumbled upon it in 2015, and I’ve even had the pleasure of working within said scene multiple times. I have no shortage of players, pro leagues, sponsors, organizations, and controversies that I could talk about. I’ve had the pleasure of being on an Esports podcast, once— multiple people have told me to start one, so if I did do a podcast, that would probably make the most sense. As for a guest, I feel like I would bring on Jake Lucky; he’s grown to be a reputable reporter and content creator, and he’s also from Iowa, so I feel like we would have a lot of fun things that we could both talk about.

What is your specific role with PetroLedger, including your day-to-day activities?

I am a dual threat: I am both a Marketing and Administrative Associate. I spend most of my days in the Houston office making and taking phone calls, filling out paperwork for some of our clients, organizing and stocking office supplies, and being the front-man of the office (since my cubicle is literally right next to the door). When I am not doing that, I work remotely with the Abilene office on various Marketing efforts, but much of my work revolves around the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of our website and blog posts, so it feels nice to get a site of my own to work on after tweaking so many! I am also responsible for a majority of the photos from the Houston office, so you may have already seen some of my handiwork!

What movie or TV show do you think everyone should watch at least once?

I would have to go with BoJack Horseman. While this show is not for everyone, it manages to juggle being funny, dark, deep, and stylish all at the same time. What also makes BoJack such an incredible show is that it does not hesitate to dig deep in terms of its characters, and even delves into philosophical topics, something that I don’t see many shows do well outside of other deep shows like Atlanta or Lucifer. If you don’t really want to think about the philosophy, at least give it a shot due to the wild ride it leads you on.
