PetroLedger Volunteers at Houston Food Bank

On June 15th, members of PetroLedger’s Houston office took a trip down to the Houston Food Bank. While working alongside other volunteers, they sorted and boxed a wide range of food items in order to aid in the fight against hunger. These boxes held a variety of food options, including nutritious foods like canned fruits and vegetables, and healthy snacks like granola bars and popcorn. With the help of some of our PetroLeaders, more nutritious meals are on their way to families who need it most!

What is the Houston Food Bank?

The Houston Food Bank is a large, non-profit charity organization that was founded in 1982. Over its  40+ year lifespan, the Houston Food Bank has grown drastically, going from delivering 1 million pounds of food within its first year to delivering 150 million meals annually. Those numerous nutritious meals are spread out to 16 different counties in Texas, serving over 1 million people that struggle to pay rent or afford proper medication. The Houston Food Bank is regarded as one of the biggest food banks in the entirety of America, winning Food Bank of The Year awards in 2015, aiding in multiple hurricane relief efforts, and feeding millions.

Today, the Houston Food Bank is fighting against hunger through their various programs. There are many programs aimed at kids, such as the Backpack Buddy and Kids Cafe, which helps to provide after school lunches to those in need. The Houston Food Bank also has the Senior Box Program, where individuals aged 60 and over are given a box of food once a month. Lastly, the Houston Food Bank provides educational tools in regards to hunger, like the Nutrition Education program that gives classes on food safety and budgeting, and the Houston Texans sponsored Huddle Against Hunger curriculum.

What is Huddle Against Hunger?

Huddle Against Hunger is a curriculum designed to provide information on hunger and poverty to elementary, middle and high school students. This program teaches the complexities of world hunger, as well as the reasons behind why people struggle with food insecurity. If anyone has kids that are interested in volunteering in person or virtually, follow this link to learn more about the program. Students who participate can get certificates and giveaways from the Houston Texans!
