Meet the Team: Henry Miller

At PetroLedger, we get to know our clients pretty well. We want you to know who we are, too. There’s a lot more personality than you might expect to find at a financial firm, and while professionalism is our first order of business, creating a fun work environment is always close behind! Today we’d like to introduce Henry Miller, our Manager of Special Projects and HR. He's a very busy gentleman, so we were lucky to get the chance to ask him a few questions!

What is your specific role with PetroLedger, including your day-to-day activities?

I currently serve as the Human Resource and Special Project Manager for PetroLedger, and my scope varies day to day.  Some of my focus items are providing counsel on hiring, recruiting, benefits, employee relations, and other training-related topics.

Let’s say you have your own talk show. If you could invite anyone to be a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

If I could have anyone on my talk show, it would be David Goggins. He is the epitome of holding yourself accountable and owning your life at all levels. His style isn’t for everyone, but I get where he is coming from: he teaches through hard work and a positive mindset that anything is possible. His accomplishments are proof of that. He has overcome adversity at every level and has been able to succeed by working hard and believing in himself. I like to emulate that when I work as a manager.

If you could travel anywhere, regardless of money or the pandemic, where would you go and why?

I have been fortunate to travel all over the world, so my travel list is small. One country that I haven’t been to is Fiji. The main reason I have never traveled there is because I believe that we might just stay and live the tropical island life forever. I lived on two islands for a total of four years. I know how great it can be.

What is one thing on the very top of your bucket list?

I have lived an exciting life and had the opportunity to do many things most people would only dream of. I basically live each day as if it was my last. There are only two items on my bucket list— one was to be tattooed by Lyle Tuttle. He recently passed away, but I was able to meet him and have a drink while I was being tattooed in 2019 before he passed, so I call that one mostly achieved. If you don’t know who he is, he is most famous for tattooing Janis Joplin and Paul Stanley. The other item is to compete in a Baja Race. It’s something I’ve never done, but think it would be an adrenaline rush and a fun experience.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

To be honest, this advice is directly out of a book that I am writing on Leadership and Mindset. Whether it may be starting a business, working towards your degree, starting a new job, or finding a solution to a problem, this advice applies to all areas. The best advice that I give people in general is that your circumstances don’t define you— your actions do and own everything in your life.

When dealing with an issue or managing people, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses are important, but working to develop them is very different. I have found that over time that this is where most people fall short. Trying to be better each day and constantly developing yourself allows you the capacity to develop other people. Having a growth mindset is key to this; your mindset directly impacts yourself and others around you, whether you realize it or not. You define what success looks like to you in every area of your life. Own everything in your life: the good, the bad, the successes, and the losses. Keep building on the good and working on the bad aspects of every area in your life.

What you will find with this mindset is that you are the only roadblock to unleashing your true potential and bringing out the potential in others. Owning everything and working to be better every day is the path to your success and the success of those around you. You must work on yourself to be a better spouse, sibling, friend, and leader. You either succeed or you learn!  True growth comes from overcoming obstacles.
